Connect your Portable SmartCam via a 4G SIM card

Updated over a week ago

Good to know:

  • You can find an article on what SIM plan to purchase and requirements for your SIM depending on your region here

  • Your SIM must be activated before using in the router

  • If you use the Portable SmartCam in a different country, you may need to manually set your APN. You can read how to do so here

  • Data usage is approximately 5GB per 1 hour of recording but this can vary. Please ensure there is available data on your SIM plan before recording

Connection process:

Step 1: Access the router for your camera

You should unscrew the two screws on the router for the SIM door. Your router can be located in the following place, depending on your Portable SmartCam:

Portable SmartCam 3:

The router is located in the camera storage slot, under the hard cover. Remove the 'Dual SIM' door to access the SIM card slot

Portable SmartCam MkII:

The router is located inside the storage box. Remove the 'Dual SIM' door to access the SIM card slot

Step 2: Insert the SIM and screw the lid back on

Insert your 2FF size SIM card into the router. The SIM should be oriented with the notched corner face down and to the side of the 'Main' antenna port. It will look like this for your respective Portable SmartCam:

Portable SmartCam 3:

Only one slot available. Orientate the SIM with the notched corner facing down and to the right of the 'Main' antenna port. You now must reattach the SIM door and secure the screws before use

Portable SmartCam Mk II:

Insert in either SIM port. Orientate the SIM with the notched corner facing down and to the right of the 'Main' antenna port. You now must reattach the SIM door and secure the screws before use

Step 3: Open Portable SmartCam Setup menu and connect

Open the 'hamburger menu' in the top left and choose 'Portable SmartCam Setup

Choose the Portable SmartCam you are connecting from the list

Accept/give permission to any first-time-use requests that appear and then press 'OK'

Join your iOS device to the local network of the router by pressing 'Join'

In most cases with 4G SIM, the connection should be automatic and look like the above. If your connection is not automatic, you can open the 'Internet settings' menu to see your SIM status

You can see your SIM here and any relevant connection information. By clicking on the slot where your SIM is inserted, you can:

  • Enter a pin code if applied to the SIM card

  • Adjust the APN (In majority of cases, this should be left as automatic)

Step 4: Run a speed test

Press 'New +'

Make sure you have selected the Portable SmartCam scene, then press 'Speed Test'

Press 'Start' to begin the speed test. You will get a rating of:

  • Good - Network strength is good for live upload

  • Suboptimal - You may encounter delays in upload and live playback

  • Bad - Will encounter delays in upload and live playback
