Remote Collaboration in Spiideo Replay

Learn how to make the most out of Remote Collaboration, where you can watch the live game together, speak using built-in audio, and present video footage on a shared screen.

Spiideo Replay's Remote Collaboration lets up to 10 participants, such as replay operators and on-field referees, connect, communicate, and share screens seamlessly in a live session.

Anyone with access to the game can join and listen to the referee communication if this feature is used.

There are two use cases:

  • Main Use Case: Sideline Referee Review

This solution is ideal when a dedicated referee review monitor solution is needed. The replay operator can be located either at the venue or entirely remotely. The on-field referee is served content by the replay operator directly to a review monitor solution placed near the sideline.

  • Alternative Use Case: Remote Replay Staff

If your remote replay staff is not located in the same place and not sitting in the same room, they can use this feature as a dedicated communication channel and utilize screen sharing to collaborate on review situations.

If the replay operator is located directly on the sideline next to the referee, it is better to use normal screen mirroring with a physical cable and a monitor rather than remote collaboration. More information about that can be found in our other help center articles.

Please note: This feature is an add-on that can be purchased separately.

Hardware and Software Requirements

The software, hardware, and network requirements for Remote Collaboration are the same as those for running standard Replay. Please follow the device requirements on our support page: Replay Hardware and Software Requirements

Hardware Setup

The setups below for the sideline monitor are not weatherproof. You must protect your setup from rain, moisture, and other harsh weather conditions.

It is recommended to set this up well before the game starts.

Replay Operator / Technician

This is the user who shares their screen and controls the experience for the device on the sideline.

Referee Review Monitor (Sideline)

Option 1: iPad Pro

  • Connection dock: Select a multiport USB-C dock with an Ethernet port and the correct regional power connector (e.g., Belkin Multiport).

  • USB-C cable: For power/connectivity.

  • Accessories: iPad Pro case and a supported wired headset.

Option 2: Mac Mini and External Monitor

  • Monitor: A normal office monitor can be used, but a monitor hood is an absolute must for outdoor visibility.

  • Accessories: Keyboard/mouse (needed for startup and if the referee wants to manually take control of Replay) and a supported wired headset.

How to Join a Collaboration

Before you join a collaboration, please note that a maximum of 10 unique users can join an in-game session. All unique users who join are counted toward this limit, even if they later leave. If the same user is logged into multiple devices and tries to join the same session, the last device to join will remain in the session, and the previous device will be removed.

Please note: Spiideo’s built-in audio functions like a normal Google Meet. It does not integrate or connect to local external referee radio communication systems.

Method 1: Join Through the Video Player Overview

This method is typically used by Replay Operators.

To join a collaboration from the video player overview:

  1. Head to an ongoing recording and click the collaboration icon in the top right corner to open the side drawer.

  2. The first time you join a collaboration, you'll need to allow Spiideo Replay to access the microphone. Select your microphone and allow access to proceed. The choice of microphone is not permanent and can be adjusted at any time.

Method 2: Join Through the 'Classic Leagues' Calendar

This method is typically used for the Sideline Referee Monitor and allows you to join a session using the 'Classic Leagues' tab before a game has officially started.

To join a collaboration via 'Classic Leagues':

  1. In the 'Classic Leagues' tab, click 'Calendar'.

  2. Click the scheduled recording followed by 'Collaborate'.

Method 3: Join Through 'Competitions'

This method is typically used for the Sideline Referee Monitor and allows you to join a session using the 'Competitions' tab before a game has officially started.

To join a collaboration via 'Competitions':

  1. In the competition, navigate to and click the game.

  2. Click the collaboration icon.

Use the Collaboration Features

Managing Audio: Mic & Speakers

Voice communication is an open channel for all participants in the session. By default, your microphone is muted when joining a collaboration. As long as you are not in sideline mode, only you can mute/unmute your microphone.

Managing your microphone can be done in two ways: via the side drawer or via the quick action button in the top right.

To manage the microphone using the side drawer, click the crossed-over microphone icon, and click it again to mute.

Once you have joined a collaboration, you can also mute unmute/mute your microphone using the quick access button in the top right.

To control the audio using the quick action button, click the microphone or crossed-over microphone icon in the top right.

You can at any time during the recording adjust the microphone input as well as the speaker output.

To adjust your microphone or speaker:

  • Microphone: Open the microphone dropdown menu and select an input device.

  • Speaker: Open the speaker dropdown menu and select an output device.

Sharing Your Screen and Adjusting Aspect Ratio

There are two ways to share your screen: via the side drawer or via the quick action button in the top right.

Please keep in mind that:

  • Only one user can share their screen at a time.

  • You can't use an iPad Pro device for screen sharing. An iPad Pro can only be used for voice communication and to view another user's shared screen.

To share your screen via the side drawer:

  1. Click 'Share your view'.

  2. In the pop-up window, click 'Allow' to grant Spiideo access to view your tab.

To share your screen via the quick action button:

  1. Click the 'Share your view' icon in the top right corner.

  2. In the pop-up window, click 'Allow' to grant Spiideo access to view your tab.

Optimizing Aspect Ratio for the Sideline Device

If your sharing device has a different aspect ratio than the viewing device (e.g., sharing from a 16:9 MacBook to a 4:3 iPad Pro 13-inch), you can use the Match Aspect Ratio setting on the sharing device.

To enable or disable Match Aspect Ratio:

  1. Click the collaboration icon in the top right corner to open the side drawer.

  2. Click the cogwheel icon in the bottom right.

  3. Click the toggle to enable or disable it.

    1. Match Aspect Ratio (ON): When enabled, the display adapts to the first device that joined the session in Sideline Mode by adding black bars to perfectly fit its screen. This adaptation only takes place during an active screen share; once the user stops sharing, the aspect ratio reverts to its original state.

    2. Match Aspect Ratio OFF: Fills the sharer's screen but may crop or letterbox on the viewer's end.

Viewing a Shared Screen

There are several ways to view a shared screen.

Click the collaboration icon in the top right corner to open the side drawer and click 'Watch' next to a user's name to view their shared screen. If you want to stop viewing, click 'Stop' at the top of the screen.

Sideline Mode

This mode is intended for the referee on the field to use, as it removes the manual clicking when needing to view a shared screen.

When activated on a device, the screen will become black and display the Spiideo Replay logo. Once a replay operator starts sharing their screen during a review, the sideline device will automatically display the operator's screen. When the operator stops sharing, the sideline device will revert to the black screen with the Spiideo Replay logo.

Please note: Anyone can mute or unmute devices set in sideline mode.

Click the 'Sideline mode' toggle to enable sidlinemode.

Once the replay operator shares their screen, the screens of the users with sideline mode enabled will automatically start showing the shared screen.

Leave a Collaboration

To leave a collaboration:

  1. Click the collaboration icon in the top right corner to open the side drawer.

  2. Click 'Leave channel'.
